The Paradise of the Caribbean, Dominican Republic

Steeped in history, the Dominican Republic is the most visited tourist destination in all of the Caribbean, and ranks 6th overall in the Americas. It hosts approximately 5 million new arrivals every single year. And 5 million people certainly seem to know how to get the most value out of their entertainment dollar as the country is internationally known as “The paradise of the Caribbean” due to the beautiful landscape throughout the entire country, from its mountains to its beaches.

Among the more popular tourist destinations with the Dominican Republic is Punta Cana. Punta Cana, located on the eastern section of the Dominican Republic, is a tourist hot spot known for its miles of breathtaking beaches and absolutely picturesque clear water. Punta Cana and Bravaro are well known for their world class beaches, particularly the 20 mile stretch known as La Costa del Coco, which is comprised of lavish, all-inclusive resorts that marvel as some of the best vacation destinations in the world today, offering; private tour, windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing. In fact, according to UNESCO, Bavaro is recognized as having the best beaches in the world and, along with Punta Cana, among the 10 best beaches in the world.

La Romana is the Dominican Republic’s seventh largest city located on the Caribbean’s coast and a gateway to many nearby resorts, including Casa de Campo. Casa de Campo is a resort located on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic and was first developed in 1975 by Gulf & Western and its then CEO, Charles Bluhdorn.

Along with its immaculate beaches, Casa de Campo is known for its world famous golf resorts. In fact, it should not be surprising to see Marine One escorting in a former President to get in a quick 18 holes at the Teeth of the Dog championship golf course before the rest of the golfers begin their rounds of play. Renowned golf architect Peter Dye created the Teeth of the Dog in the early 1970s and the world’s golfers flocked to the course after it served as the backdrop for the 1971 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The course remains the only Caribbean course consistently ranked in the world’s top 100 courses.

Another Dye masterpiece, Dye Fore, was created in 2000 and skirts cliffs 300 feet high above the Chavon River, with views of the village of Altos de Chavon. In fact, looking down across the river you may see familiar sights as it served as the backdrop to the river scenes in Francis Ford Coppola’s wartime masterpiece, Apocalypse Now. 

With its beautiful beaches, historic destinations, and world class golf resorts, the Dominican Republic truly is the “paradise of the Caribbean”.
