Angkor Wat
1 Travellers to the Angkor Wat are instantly struck by its majestic splendour and intricate historical carvings making it one of the finest and well-preserved monuments of Cambodia as well as being the largest religious monuments in the world. While photographs can capture its beauty on your sightseeing tour, nothing can prepare you for the spiritual sensation and excitement you feel as you near this spectacular temple complex and ruins.
Beng Mealea
2 Probably one of the most mysterious temples in the area its neglect means it has been almost entirely swallowed up by the surrounding jungle. Its ruinous state of collapsed galleries and towers, however, makes it a fantastic place for exploring on a custom tour and having your very own Raiders of the Lost Ark adventure. Its sheer size means it was built by somebody of great importance but who remains a mystery.
Wat Preah Prom Rath
3 Located by the river in tranquil gardens full of spectacular flower displays and palm trees this Pagoda nestles between other oriental style buildings. Crossing an elaborately decorated bridge takes you to a rather ornate carved gate leading into the temple grounds. Scattered around these calming spiritual grounds are its many towers a university and several resting areas perfect for reflection and recharging the batteries.
Angkor National Museum
4 For enthusiasts of archaeology, this large imposing museum building is a must as it houses artefacts from the ancient Khmer civilisation. Various displays take you through the history of the area including traditional costume and religion amongst others. A guided private tour of this state of the art museum dedicated to the varied and colourful history of the region and will fascinate both the casual visitor and the history connoisseur
Bayon
5 Once camouflaged by the dense jungle and undergrowth this temple structure remained hidden from view and undiscovered for many years. Only after it was completely uncovered did it become apparent how architecturally striking it is. Over 54 towers carved with 2,000 enormous faces each with heavy-lidded eyes and their slightly curving lips look down on the curious visitors forcing them to guess at their thoughts.
Banteay Srei
6 Banteay Srei or Citadel of Women or Beauty is so named as the tiny carved reliefs around the temple could only have been cut by the delicate hands of a woman. Depicting Hindu tales from far off ancient times the central inner sanctuary surrounded by a now dry moat is adorned with these delicate works. A guided private tour shows how much has been lovingly restored to its former glory including two libraries in the inner enclosure.
Angkor Thom
7 Set over 10m2 and surrounded by a moat the last great capital of the Khmer Empire Angkor Whom or Great City could not be more aptly named. Built on the West Bank of the river and surrounded by high walls it is hard to imagine any potential invaders contemplating invasion. So much to see here on a custom tour including the Terrace of the Elephants and Leper King as well as five colossal gates each with a causeway over the moat
Cambodian Cultural Village
8 Families travelling with kids will find this village a blessing and welcome distraction offering a few hours diversion from the tiring pace of such a holiday. Beginning with a wax museum, it shows many of Cambodia's landmark buildings. As well as these there are recreations of Chinese and Khmer villages and its housing all in miniature. At each location, traditional dances and customs are performed particular to that community.
Street 8
9 When your day is over, and the sun goes down what do you do? Time to hit the nightlife of Siem Reap or as it is more commonly known Street 8. At night it becomes a strictly pedestrian area and has street performers along with many bars and restaurants. A real entertainment hub. Not just for the young or backpackers you never know you may be back every night, after all, we are all young hearted inside.
Angkor Golf Resort
10 Probably not what you would expect to find in Cambodia but hey why not? A round of golf in these heavenly surroundings would certainly be a novelty. Designed by Sir Nick Faldo, this immaculately kept all-year-round 16 hole course opened in 2008 and includes a driving range. No course would be complete without the Clubhouse, and this ultramodern building certainly lives up to expectations and will not disappoint.
