Overview

Lake Chala, also known as Dschalla, is a crater lake in a caldera on the borders of Kenya and Tanzania on the eastern edge of Mount Kilimanjaro, 8km north of Taveta and 55 km from the town of Moshi.

Depending on the time of year, it ranges in colour from deep blue to turquoise and green and is surrounded by a 100 meters high crater rim. The lake is fed by groundwater flows, which come from Mount Kilimanjaro, fed and drained underground with a rate of about 10 million m³ / year. Even the Chalk loses volume. Its level had dropped in the last 6 years, by 2.4 meters, at the start of 2011 the water level has risen again by over 1 meter.

We will pick you up at your hotel in the Morning and drive to Lake Chala Area, After getting all required permits, we will start walking around the Lake where you will have an opportunity to swim in the lake and also to do kayaking.

In the Afternoon you will have lunch and drinks. You can then continue swim, kayak or walk around.

In the evening we will take you to your hotel in Moshi.

Lake Chala was a wonderful day trip for my roommates and me, who are living in Machame for a month. It's quite a hike to the bottom, but the trek down had some great views, too! Perfect day trip.

If you are looking to spend a day of relaxing and taking it slow, away from the hustle of a city, Lake Chala is a perfect getaway. It's a crater lake, and the water is quite warm. It's secluded and a great place to go for a swim or just hang out.

Located in a crater, Lake Chala has a beauty of its own. One cannot actually tell that there is a lake in that crater until you climb up the hill and see the beauty. People swim in that lake.

After a long drive, you arrive at Lake Chala. This lake is extremely deep and is located half in Tanzania and half in Kenya. Around the lake, you can do many different things, like camping, hiking or kayaking. We did not have the time to stay several nights so we only went for a day trip and took out the kayaks to kayak to Kenya! There are also possibilities to eat there. Lake Chala is a beautiful place to go on a trip and for a beautiful hike and/or kayak trip - just don't forget to bring sunscreen!
