Overview

Lake Chala, also known as Dschalla, is a crater lake in a caldera on the borders of Kenya and Tanzania on the eastern edge of Mount Kilimanjaro, 8km north of Taveta and 55 km from the town of Moshi.

Depending on the time of year, it ranges in colour from deep blue to turquoise and green and is surrounded by a 100 meters high crater rim. The lake is fed by groundwater flows, which come from Mount Kilimanjaro, fed and drained underground with a rate of about 10 million m³ / year. Even the Chalk loses volume. Its level had dropped in the last 6 years, by 2.4 meters, at the start of 2011 the water level has risen again by over 1 meter.

We will pick you up at your hotel in the Morning and drive to Lake Chala Area, After getting all required permits, we will start walking around the Lake where you will have an opportunity to swim in the lake and also to do kayaking.

In the Afternoon you will have lunch and drinks. You can then continue swim, kayak or walk around.

In the evening we will take you to your hotel in Moshi.

Breathtaking views, totally calm and beautiful! You can spend hours just staring and listening to the silence. For more active ones, I did kayaking on the lake and it was extraordinary!

This is a beautiful lake. Lovely for a swim. The place is rather isolated but worth a stay. Gives a chance to walk into Kenya.Beautiful area and a lovely LONG walk available around the lake or short one down into the lake.

The drive there is beautiful, very scenic. You can view the whole lake from the viewpoint. A 20 minutes hike down (sneakers will be just fine) and you are down at the lake shore, where you can kayak and paddle of to the Kenyan border.

Lake Challa is such a beautiful place, the clear blue waters and green forests make it a must visit for anyone wanting to see the beauty in Tanzania. Also, you are able to cross the border into Kenya - so you can say you have been to Kenya too!

Beautiful scenery. When arriving there you get an amazing view of the lake. You can them walk down to the lakes edge and get in a 1-man or 2-man canoe and canoe to the other side which is in Kenya. The border of Tanzania and Kenya actually runs across the middle of the lake. A great day trip.

An amazing place that is almost uninhabited from the Kenyan side and because of that it maintains its natural beauty. The watercolour is breathtaking so much so you could just sit at one place and let it mesmerise you and slowly achieve the inner peace that you have been always wanting. There is a route that takes you right down to the shore and if you are brave enough you can actually take a dip and enjoy the clear water unspoiled by any effects of globalization...Worth a visit if you love natural beauty preserved in its original state.
